Welcome to Week 8. I hope families are keeping warm. This weather is challenging for the students as they spend many breaks indoors if it is raining. This week continues to be a busy week, students have competed in various rugby events and the Year 8 excursion to Collaroy is in its final day today. I am hearing stories of very happy and engaged students. Many thanks to Mrs Nowlan for organising this excursion and to Mr Conor Quinn, Miss Woods, Mr Igoe-Taylor and Mr Croese for giving their time to be on this trip. Excursions are a very valuable way for students to experience new activities and meet new people in different locations and are an important part of the Hennessy experience.
Mrs Fiona Tanner will finish up at the end of term to take on a new career. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and recognise Mrs Tanner for her contributions to Hennessy since she joined our team in 2011. She has been a much-valued member of the front office staff because of her professionalism and supportive nature. Mrs Tanner has been instrumental in the promotion of the College through her marketing expertise and creativity
Mrs Kathryn Willis will increase her hours and Ms Shelby Inwood will also be joining the front office team.
We are trying to promote a clear K - 12 pathway from the various regional schools to Hennessy. As part of this collaboration, Hennessy will be hosting the Western Regioni Mary Quinane choir for primary students next Thursday.
I would like to encourage you to consider two upcoming events - The Community Council Movie Night on Thursday, June 23, and the Hennessy Variety Night on June 30.
I will be on Long Service Leave for the remainder of the term. Mrs Sharon Hibbert, supported by Mrs Mary Wright, will be filling in for me in my absence.
Please remember that the last day of term is a Pupil Free Day.
All the best for restful and happy holidays.
This week our Year 8 students of the College have travelled to Collaroy to spend three days bonding together as a group and facing a range of different challenges. Hennessy Catholic College prides itself on providing opportunities for our students to develop holistically and in as many ways as possible. Thanks must go to our staff on the camp, Leader: Emily Nowlan, Conor Quinn, Lucy Woods, Brendan Croese and Peter Igoe Taylor, who offered up their time to support our students.
Hennessy Catholic College has a strong Pastoral Care system that prides itself in promoting a range of ways that students can be involved in the life of the school. Through this system we reward students for having the courage and leadership to experience new opportunities.
The focus of the rewards system is on all round effort and participation in the THREE key Hennessy areas -
■ Live spiritually
■ Learn dynamically
■ Act justly.
Students are awarded points for each activity or achievement they are involved in.
Students aim to gain points in all 3 areas (Living Spiritually, Learn Dynamically, Act Justly). These points also contribute to the House (Nagle, McAuley, Gallagher and Rice).
There are 4 levels of achievement students aim to work their way through in a school year.
House award (certificate from House Leader, presented at House Assembly)
Bronze award (certificate from Director Of Students/ Studies, presented at House Assembly)
Silver award (certificate + canteen voucher from Assistant Principal presented at College Assembly)
Gold award (certificate + rewards day/Principal prize presented by Principal at College Assembly)
Below are some examples on how students are able to involve themselves to receive points:

The Trial HSC Timetable will be available next week - these will be in Weeks 4 and 5 of Term 3. Students will only be required to be at school for their examinations but may access the library at other times.
Free ATAR Lectures in the July holidays - information has been posted to your Yr 12 classroom page and students should consider taking advantage of these free sessions to assist them with Trial preparation.
NOTE: There are also some lectures for Year 10 and 11 subjects such as Sciences and Maths subjects.
Stage 6
Students are busy completing their assessments and need to ensure that they are looking after their wellbeing. Headspace has some great tips for managing workloads during examinations but it’s imperative during all times where many assessments are due. Their main advice is:
- Take the time to plan - this is really important if students have outside commitments that are causing additional time constraints
- Look after yourself - build in some downtime and ensure you’re not hungry when studying
- Rest when you need to - don’t study more than 40-50 minutes with a short break and try and get plenty of sleep
- Stay focussed - it’s OK to say no to social events if you are studying - many more will come along. Turn off distractions too.
- Ask for help - do this earlier rather than later - contact your teacher if you need some assistance
- Be prepared - rehearse the conditions of the task such as practising writing out answers (if an exam) or practice speeches in front of a mirror.

On Tuesday 7th June, McAuley House held their Annual Dine and Donate event. "Dine and Donate” has been created in order to prepare and donate vital meals to the less fortunate in the Hilltop’s community. The initiative consists of students preparing meals and packing and sealing them for donation to local charities to be given to those less fortunate.
On the evening we cooked Honey Garlic chicken and Fried rice and managed to donate over 45 meals to those in need.
ALL SCHOOLS CUP NETBALL
On Tuesday 7 June, we had 7 teams participate in the Netball All Schools Cup. Our years 7/8 girls (Saints), 7/8 boys (Cardinals), and year 10 boys (Knights) all progressed to phase 2 which will be held in Wagga next term.
BOYS RUGBY 7's
On Tuesday 14 June students travelled to Wagga to compete in the South West Slopes Rugby 7's Carnival.
All teams played exceptionally well and were placed 1st in the various pools.
Unfortunately the Year 7 team were beaten in the semi final, whilst the Year 9/10 team progressed through to the grandfinal where they went down in extra time.
The Year 11/12 team also progressed to the grandfinal and were champions for the day.
Both the Years 9/10 and 11/12 teams wil play in the finals at Canberra in Term 3.
Yesterday in Round 1 of the Hennessy State of Origin – Year 12 NSW Team dominated the Year 11 QLD Team – Year 12 captain Mackenzie Fliedner won the toss and took the advantage of the field position. Year 11 were slow to take the field, under the leadership of Charly Thompson the Year 11 took the early lead however, they just could not defend against the speed of the Year 12s. At the half way point, it was locked at 8-8 which could have gone either way however, the agility of Aidan Hines could not be stopped allowing Year 12 to take the lead, then another quick try from Chelsea Cleverdon put Year 12 in a comfortable position, Year 11 continued to fight but just were not strong enough Year 12 taking the win with the final score of 20 – 12.
Year 10 Science are currently studying Genetics as part of their term 2 Biology unit. Mrs McCarthy’s class have created a new generation of “Vegetable People” as the students explore sex-linked inheritance and genetic diversity amongst siblings.
Year 9 Science are studying Biology throughout term 2 and are currently learning about the Nervous System. Mrs McCarthy’s year 9 classes have conducted a brain dissection this week as they explore the control centre of the body.
Year 7 Tec have been busy in the kitchen cooking mini quiches using the eggs from Ag plot.
Congratulations to our 7/8 and 9/10 Girls Rugby 7s teams who braved the wet and the cold today in Wagga and put in a stellar performance. The 7/8 team won their respective division and the 9/10 girls were runners-up. Both teams will progress to the next round in Canberra. What a fantastic result, well done ladies.
Premier's Anzac Memorial Scholarship Winner - Jorja O'Brien
20 STUDENTS SECURE PREMIER’S ANZAC MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Twenty students from Armidale to Parramatta and Gosford will embark on a two-week historical study tour in NSW, the ACT and Darwin as part of the 2022 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship announced today.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said by partaking in this tour, successful students will further develop their knowledge and understanding of the history of Australians at war.
“I congratulate the Scholarship recipients, who are being recognised for their positive contributions to their local communities, their respect for the service and sacrifice of Australian Defence Force personnel and their passion for studying history,” Mr Perrottet said.
“Over 125 students applied for the scholarship, and the 20 successful applicants come from places across Sydney and regional NSW, including Armidale, Bathurst, Young and Jindabyne.”
Minister for Transport and Veterans David Elliott said the 20 successful students will visit important places associated with Australia’s military history.
“This is a wonderful experience, and it is vital that current generations continue to learn about the military history of New South Wales and our nation,” Mr Elliott said.
“The tour will be accompanied by a military historian to teach students about our nation’s military past and help them understand the importance of commemoration.
“In the 80th year since the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese in 1942, students will visit significant sites associated with the Second World War in and around Darwin,” he said.
Hennessy college's very own recipient: Jorja O'Brien in Year 11 was excited to be a scholarship recipient and tells us, " As an avid History student, I am keen to develop my knowledge regarding such an integral element of Australia's history. I am grateful for this incredible opportunity to make friendships with new and like minded students.
More information about the Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship is available below.
9.1 Science - Measuring receptors.
Measuring receptors and response from stimulus. nervous system. ruler drop test.
Students were surprised how quickly their results improved with repetition.
Many started to catch ruler at 30-70cm. With 5 students being able to catch the rule at 0cm passing through hands.
