Welcome to the first newsletter for Term 2. Our term began with a staff day where all staff were trained in safeTALK which is a suicide awareness program. This was a valuable day which further equipped all staff to be informed on this very important topic. It was very positive to see so many students and staff attend local Anzac Day services throughout the region. We were very fortunate to have our Hilltops Mayor, Mrs Margaret Rolls, our local state member, the Honourable Mrs Steph Cook and 24 members of the Veteran Bike Club attend our Hennessy Anzac Day service. Mr Jay Moriarty, the Vice president of the bike club, gave the Anzac Day address and students really enjoyed talking to the club members after the service.
It is with mixed feelings that I announce the following resignations from Hennessy. For each of these people, I am happy for them to be moving on to new experiences and opportunities but I am very sad for them to be leaving our community.
Mrs Jenny Holloway has been working at Hennessy, and formerly St Mary’s, since 1999 in the front office and as the principal’s assistant. Mrs Holloway will be greatly missed for the huge contributions she has made to the foundation and development of the college in her time here. For the staff and students at Hennessy, Mrs Holloway has been someone who is always ready to listen, to support them when needed, to attend to their injuries and sickness, to ensure that their stories are known as well as someone who is valued for her efficient and friendly manner. She has worked with eight different principals in her role and each of them has found her to be a person of extreme loyalty, insight, kindness and someone they could trust always.
Mrs Emma Wark has been working as a learning support assistant for the past seven years at Hennessy. She will be moving on to a law position at Cowra. This is a wonderful opportunity for Mrs Wark but she will be greatly missed by both staff and students for her kindness and outstanding support of the students in her care. Mrs Wark can always be relied upon for her enthusiasm and her genuine interest and care for the students she works with.
Ms Bec White, our canteen manager has also announced that she will be ending her canteen lease at the end of the term. Bec is a much-valued member of the Hennessy community. She is much loved by students and staff for her ready smile and amazing selection of food. She has been at Hennessy for 15 years and has provided invaluable service over this time.
I am sure everyone in the Hennessy community will join me in extending our deepest gratitude and best wishes to Mrs Holloway, Mrs Wark and Ms White.
At Wednesday night’s Community Council Meeting, a new hat was added to the uniform list. This is a two-sided bucket hat (school colours and crest on one side and House Colour and crest on the other side). This hat will be a great addition to our uniform to provide better sun protection and to further promote House pride. We will let you know when this is available to purchase.
The cross country and colour run were held on Monday in cold conditions. Students really enjoyed the day and there were some very strong cross-country results. Thank you to Mr Croese and his team for such an enjoyable event.
In our year of Walking Together we can reflect on the St Mary MacKillop quote -
“So great is the strength we possess in our unity.” Hennessy continues to have many wonderful examples of being a unified community thanks to its students, staff and families.
Kathy Holding
Principal
It has been yet another wonderful start to the term at Hennessy. This term we have already been on Year 11 Retreat enjoying each others company - the students were open to all of the ideas and really lived the experience of Salt and Light. Some comments from the students are below.
The final liturgy helped to tie the whole retreat together nicely and was a good way to reflect before heading home. The affirmations are a really good idea because we get to see how our peers perceive us and get to be reminded that we are all an important part of our Hennessy community and that we all have something unique and interesting to offer.
Scavenger hunts are always a classic and always lots of fun, it allowed us to explore the grounds of the monastery a little more and I liked that we had to do it in our birth month groups allowing us to connect and make more friendships within our year. The serving experiment was really good as it was able to teach us a serious message in a fun and interactive way. Mr Miller sharing was one of THE BEST parts of the retreat. At every retreat at least one teacher should share a life story like that especially if they are a new teacher because it always ends up being one of the best most memorable parts (like Mrs Wright on year 10), it allows us to connect and see you as more than just our teachers, reminding us that school is just one part of your life the same as us.
The liturgy was a good idea, I really enjoyed it, I personally think it allowed to see who truly cared about you. Variety night was so fun, loved the acts and it was a good show when Amelia and Baker did their performance.
Unfortunately the Mr Miller vs Mrs Wright footrace was postponed due to weather conditions. However the opinion polls highly favoured a Mrs Wright domination as per usual.
We invite all mothers, grandmothers, aunties and carers to our Mother’s Day Celebration next week. We will meet for Mass at 8am followed by a BBQ Breakfast on the Parish lawn, please RSVP here for catering purposes: https://forms.gle/np7VuZGuPrGWogVg6
On May 27th students, parents and Hennessy Community members are invited to celebrate mass at our Parish mass at 6pm in the St Mary’s Church. Directly following Mass we will hold the first Parish Youth Group for the Year and invite all young people to attend.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Students are settling into classes well and enjoying the many extracurricular opportunities that are coming up this term. These are great for our students to be involved in but do result in students being out of lessons. It is important that when you are away from school you check your google classroom and catch up on any missed work.
HSC Examinations
The HSC Timetable has been released and distributed via the Year 12 Classroom page. Remember that exams cannot be rescheduled so you MUST ensure that you are available for each exam you are doing. These run from October 9 until November 3 so any plans should be from at least November 4 onwards to avoid issues. Students are not considered to have completed their course unless they attend their Category A exams (Category B subjects such as VET subjects, English Studies and Maths Standard 1 have optional exams). Every student should be logging into Students Online so they can access their personal HSC timetable.
The timetable is available via this link: HSC written Exam timetable, which also includes the subject equipment requirements.

The Leaders Lounge - Student Leadership Article
Welcome back to the Leaders Lounge for Term 2! We hope everyone has had a lovely and restful school holiday and are excited to get back into the swing of things. The Leadership Team is really excited for all of the upcoming events and student involvement that is coming up this term. |
ANZAC Day services were held across the district with Hennessy students participating in marches, wreath layings, flag bearings and speeches in Boorowa, Grenfell, Harden, Murringo and Young. It was really good to see lots of students come and participate in commemorative services. Our College’s ANZAC Day service was held on the first day back of Term 2. We were privileged to have special guests the Hon. Steph Cooke, Mayor Margaret Roles and the members of the Veteran Motorcycle Club join us. We would like to thank Mr Mitchell for organising our service as well. Last Monday (1st May), Hennessy Catholic College held Cross Country and Colour Run. Despite the amount of rain over the weekend, this turned out to be a blast with a high number of students participating in both events The highlight of the day was by far the colour run! A lot of students wore a white or black t-shirt and participated in the three kilometre course, where at various points throughout the run our year 12 students would throw colour onto participating students. This event was also to raise money for the Year 12 charity CanAssist and it was great to see so many people support the event. There were many smiles and laughs. It was safe to say that many students went home with a face full of colour too. |
Friday 12th May (Week 3) will be the College’s Athletics Carnival. We are encouraging everyone to come decked out in their house colours (Nagle/Green, McAuley/Blue, Rice/Red and Gallagher/Fluro Yellow). We are encouraging everyone to get involved in the events and gain points for their house too! Hennessy Day is also fast approaching, being held on the 18th May. As voted by the students, the dress up theme for this year’s Hennessy Day is to come dressed up as something beginning with the letter of your first name! Hennessy Day is always tonnes of fun with the Leadership Team and Year 12 cohort planning the activities for the day already. As part of Youth Week, Hilltops Shire Council Youth Officer, Anna Dreverman organised for Financial Advisor, Alishia Carswell, to visit high schools in the Hilltops region to discuss financial literacy and issues relevant to young people. Students loved participating in this workshop and learning more from Alishia. We would also like to thank the Hilltops Council for this amazing opportunity for the students. |
In House Cup news, we are really excited that Gallagher has hit the term running, coming back from last place to second on the fresh start of term. Though Nagle is still leading, it will be highly contested especially with Cross Country, Athletics Carnival and Hennessy Day points still to come. As always we encourage all students to come and chat with the Leadership Team with their questions, concerns, comments or ideas. |
Thank you for reading this week's edition of the Leaders Lounge! Have a good week, James Payne Gallagher House Vice Captain |
On Monday students participated in our annual cross country and colour run. All enoyed the day despite the cold conditions.
