Welcome to Week 4. There is no doubt that Hennessy is a very welcoming and supportive community. Students and staff are very friendly and our new students seem to be settling in well and making new friends.
Over the past two weeks many staff and students have been involved in community barbeques in Boorowa, Murrumburrah, Cootamundra and Grenfell. This has been a wonderful opportunity to meet families from these towns and to answer questions about Hennessy. Our Open Day is on May 26 but families are always welcome to tour the school at any time.
Year 11 Vice Captain speeches were held on Tuesday morning. There were seventeen candidates across the four houses. The standard of candidates was very high and their speeches were well prepared and genuine. I am proud to announce that the Vice Captains for 2020 are:
Joy Cass - Gallagher
Liam Jewitt - McAuley
Mia Hennock - Nagle
Justin Garlick - Rice
Vice Captain badges will be formally presented at the College Opening Mass on Monday, February 25. All families are very welcome to attend this important event. The Mass will formally launch our 2020 motto - ‘To live justly’. This motto challenges us to not just talk about the injustices of the world but to ‘walk the walk’ of doing actions to work against injustice.
Your son or daughter will possibly already have told you of our mobile phone policy. All phones are collected at the start of each lesson. This means that students have five hours without the distraction of mobile phones each school day. This policy is to both support student learning and to reduce the time spent on social media. Students have been very cooperative with this policy and have reported that they are definitely spending less time on social media and are less distracted in class.
It has been very heartening to see rain over the past few weeks. The rainfall totals have been variable but it has given our farmers hope. Please keep those affected by drought in your prayers.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are concerned about anything or just if you would like to introduce yourself. My email is kathy.holding@cg.catholic.edu.au
WELCOME TO ALL OUR NEW STUDENTS
Now we are settled in we would like to also welcome all our new students across Years 7-11. We are still learning names but it’s lovely to see so many happy faces.
We have been visiting classrooms and students are working well with their peers and their teachers. Over the next few weeks we will be asking students about WHY they are learning about their task.
CHANGING ELECTIVES
This will cease tomorrow and all classes will be set – we are appreciative of the patience of all the students who have waited to get the subjects they want.
It’s important now for all students to settled into their classes and focus on moving their learning forward.
SAVE THE DATE
Parent Teacher Student Conferences for Years 7-12 will be held at Hennessy on Thursday 12 March from 8am-6pm. This is the first opportunity for you to speak with your child’s teacher around their learning and we look forward to seeing everyone there.
There will be no classes for Years 7-11 that day (although there will be supervision in the library during school hours). Year 12 classes will run as normal and appointments should be made before or after school or when students have study.
More information will come shortly about how to book interviews.
LOCATION OF ASSESSMENT POLICIES FOR YEARS 11 AND 12
A reminder that students can access their assessment policy as well as forms for Illness/Misadventure, Extensions and Appeals on the Hennessy Student Google Drive – under ‘Forms and Assessments. The policy is also available on the Hennessy website under Teaching and Learning.
Its important students use this guide when preparing for assessments so they are aware of rules, procedures and penalties.

The HCCY annual swimming carnival took place on Friday 7th February. There were some fantastic dress ups (especially those pineapples), an amazing House Macarena dance off and some great competition in the pool. Fergus Moore broke a 13 year old record, previously held by Matthew Kimber (35.54) in the 12 years 50 metres boys freestyle, with a time of 35.15. Well done Fergus!

Dear Gallagher Students and Families,
In Week 7 of Term 1 on Tuesday 10 March, Gallagher House and Hennessy Catholic College will be hosting a “Dine and Donate” event in the hospitality facilities at school.
"Dine and Donate” has been created in order to raise funds and also prepare and donate vital meals to the less fortunate in the Hilltop’s community. The initiative consists of a student coming to school with a parent and preparing meals. The student and their parents will then sit and eat one meal each with the other students and parents. The remaining meals will then be packed and sealed and donated to local charities to be given to those less fortunate.
We invite you to attend this event with your child to support our community.
The cost of entry for each individual is $10 which will be used in order to supply the food that will be cooked and any remaining profit will be donated to local charities.
This event is open to students in years 10-12 as well as their families. Information notes are available on the Gallagher Classroom page or directly from Mr Miller in the House Leaders Office.
Please contact me at the College if you would like more information.
Kind Regards
Mr Luke Miller
Year 8.1 is working with Ms Green in Tec this term. Students are working on reading and following instructions to create various projects within the SketchUp program. Once the students have created their main project; a name tag, they will then get the opportunity to print their design on the 3D printer.
This process involves the students learning the process of transferring the files from their computer to a school computer with the printing program, rescaling the name tag to fit on the printer base and then watch all aspects come together to create a 3D product. The photos below show the design is printed.
ANZAC Day Writing Competition
This year's topic is “Remembering our ANZACs in the Riverina and Central West”. Students are invited to write a short story or a poem on this topic, perhaps creating a work in which they are a wartime student whose parent is off serving at the warfront. It should be no more than 250 words and the students' own work and research.
If you would like to participate, please email Megan.Jasprizza@cg.catholic.edu.au
National Geography Competition
Geography Challenge! Students in Years 7-10 are invited to participate in the National Geography Competition. The HSIE Department will cover the cost of entry for each student. More information can be found at www.geographycompetition.org.au If you would like your child to participate, please email your permission to Megan.Jasprizza@cg.catholic.edu.au |
