Welcome to Week 8. Our vertical pastoral care class system is one of the strong Hennessy pastoral initiatives. This means that students form strong bonds with one teacher they meet with each day and their pastoral care group from Years 7 - 12. Mrs McInerncy has been organising ‘state of origin’ games between various year groups this week. This is a great way to bring in some healthy competition and to bring together students from all year groups in their breaks. In the final match Year 11 (NSW) narrowly defeated Year 10 (Queensland) in a very close and exciting game.
After discussion with the Hennessy Executive Team and the School Community Council, the current mobile phone policy will be extended to include no mobile phones for Year 7 and Year 8 in 2025. We are aware that much of the cyber bullying and inappropriate use of phones does occur out of school but this is a small step for students to spend time each day without their phones. As a College, we will continue our commitment to offering ongoing educational support in this area. Next week the Cyber Safety Project presentations will occur for students from Year 7 - Year 11. An excellent source of information for parents is also the eSafety Commissioner’s website https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/resources Students can bring phones to school to safely store in the Front Office if parents require contact with their child before or after school.
Last night the College Executive Team of myself, Mrs Wright, Mrs McInerney, Mr Mergard and Mrs Woods spent the night at the Young Railway Station as part of the Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout. Soup and rolls generously made by our Hennessy students and served by community members and Miss Rogers and Mrs Cafe greeted us on our arrival. We were involved in various activities to heighten our awareness of homelessness and we learned the very challenging fact that there are currently 52 homeless people in Young (this does not include ‘couch surfers’). 43 people participated in the Sleepout last night in Young, including our colleagues from St Anne’s. Temora. The night was chilly and rainy and we learned that 3 pieces of cardboard and a sleeping bag does not make for a very restful night!
Our Hennessy team has so far raised a total of $13,239 for this important cause. Donations are still being accepted until the end of June via the link below.

Thank you so much to those who have already generously donated.
Homelessness can affect anyone at any time. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has found that over 122,000 Australians are experiencing homelessness. Of these, 55.9% are male, 44.1% are women and 14.4% are children aged under 12 years. |

Last night was a cold and wet night where over 40 members of the Young community and the Hennessy Exec participated in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout at the local train station. Although we were woken by the lady with the dog, the many alarms going off at night, the sweet snoring of Mrs McInerney and Mr Megard as well as the bin truck and street sweeper, we were thankful for the absence of frost. The experience was a stark reminder of the harsh realities faced by many in our community. Darren Bear, head of our local St. Vincent de Paul chapter, highlighted that sleeping rough means finding shelter at train stations, under bridges, in parks, or in cars. In Young, over 50 people endure these conditions every night.
The funds raised through this event are vital in supporting Vinnies' efforts to provide essential services both locally and nationwide. During this cost of living crisis, the pressure on everyone is immense, and your support has been overwhelming. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who participated and donated.
This week, we hosted the Young Lasallian retreats, offering each year level an opportunity to engage with their faith journey. Understanding that everyone is at different stages of their spiritual path, these retreats allow students to take time out to reflect and connect with their peers outside of class and church settings.
Next week, we welcome back the Cyber Safety Project, which will engage students from Years 7 to 11 in discussions about the impact of their online choices. Earlier this term, students participated in a survey, and the results, specific to our school, will be shared with parents next week to provide insights into our students' device usage.
Next term, we will be running the Seasons for Growth program, facilitated by a trained Catholic Care professional. This program helps students navigate change and loss in a variety of scenarios, providing them with essential coping strategies. Registration is required over the next week for students of any age who wish to participate.
We have noticed an increase in uniform infringements, particularly regarding ties, which are a mandatory part of both the ladies' and gentlemen's winter uniforms. Students not adhering to the uniform policy will receive infringements. Students who are feeling particularly cold are reminded they are welcome to wear both the woolen jumper and a plain (no logos) navy jacket. Students are also encouraged to wear thermals/ undergarments should they be feeling particularly cold. Additionally, parent notes for uniform exceptions for some students are becoming frequent. These will now be followed up with teachers and House Leaders to ensure compliance. Second-hand uniforms are available at the front office for those in need.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. Together, we can create a nurturing and respectful environment for our students to thrive.

Major events coming up include ArchdiocesanSoccer Gala Day and CEO Sleepout! TRhis week Hennessy showed off its soccer skills at the Soccer Gala Day, students played well and made sure they showcased the true Hennessy Sportsmanship.
Yesterday was the CEO sleepout, which saw some of our favourite teachers and staff participating in order to raise awareness for homelessness within our communities. So make a last minute donation to support your choice of; Mrs Holding, Mrs Wright, Mr Mergard, Mrs McInerney and Mrs Woods. All funds raised will go to the Western Region of the Archdiocese which helps aid people suffering from homelessness.
School State of Origin has come to its finals with Yr 7 and Yr 12 playing for the bronze award on Tuesday. Both sides showed some real talent (especially Nagle captain Dieter Dickinson), Yr 7 by surprise pulled through with the victory beating Yr 12’s 3 - 1. The Yr 12 team were difficult to beat as they displayed a profound level of perseverance and sportsmanship. The final game was held with Yr 11 facing off against the Yr 10's. The Yr11's managed to pull through and secure the win in what can only be described as a magical game. Thankyou to all the players and teams that participated, and a special thank you to Mrs McInerney and everyone else that helped uphold this Hennessy tradition.
I would also like to give a special mention to the Hennessy boy’s basketball team that secured a place at the State Basketball Championships where they will play for the state title, thank you to Chris Holt (Owner of NRG Fitness) for his support in training and coaching the boy’s team over the past month. Goodluck next week and make sure you show off our Hennessy Spirit.
Moving on to our house initiatives, Nagle Dine and Donate was a hit bringing in many Nagle families to cook together in support of raising money. On the menu was pumpkin risotto and chicken which I heard tasted amazing, captains Dieter, Camden and not to forget house leader Mrs Nowlan did a fantastic job organising for Nagle, thank you!

Variety Night! THURSDAY 27th June!
Today we were fortunate enough to have the super talented Morgan Foster, from Naked Cakes By Morgan showcase her amazing cake decorating skills for our year 9/10 Food Tech students.
Morgan, so kindly brought in a four tiered red velvet cake that she decorated in an old world style to the delight of students and teachers.
This followed on from the students showcasing their own talents with decorating cakes a few weeks ago.
To the delight of students we were able to eat the cake and it was quickly devoured. A very talented ex Hennessy student!!
On Wednesday 5 June, 12 Hennessy students travelled to Sydney to compete in the NSW CCC Cross Country. Congratulations to all students who made this event.
Congratulations to Eliza Taylor who this week trialed and was successful in gaining a position in the NSW CCC 7s Rugby team.
Well done Eliza!
Heartwarming Nagle Dine & Donate
On Tuesday, June 18th, Nagle students and their families came together for a heartwarming event that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of community and generosity. The Nagle Dine & Donate, held after school, saw participants cook and donate 40 meals of delicious pumpkin and chicken risotto for those less fortunate.
The event featured enthusiastic participation from several dedicated students and their families. Among the volunteers were Josh Cameron and his father Paul, Camden Cummins and her mother Donna, Jas and Azaela Sullivan, Zac Long, Annie and Jess Banwell with their mother Melissa, April and Dieter Dickinson with their mother Louise, Ruby Holt with her mother Karina, Madi and Carter James with their mother Cindy, John and Bonny Bromham with their mother Josy with a star appearance from Ms Buchanan, Mrs Nowlan, Ms Coffee and Mrs Wright.
The recipe, provided by Camden Cummins, served as the foundation for the meals. With everyone working together in the school’s kitchen, they prepared the risotto from scratch. The team chopped, stirred, and seasoned their way to creating a nutritious and hearty dish.
After cooking the meal the families sat down and ate their well made, delicious meals. The remaining meals were carefully packaged and donated to those in need, ensuring that the warmth and care put into the cooking extended beyond the walls of the school.

As part of their World War I unit, the students learnt about the harsh realities of trench warfare focuses on the reasons, conditions and construction. In groups, they meticulously crafted trenches in a shoebox, vividly capturing the gritty reality of trench warfare.
Our Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students enjoyed an educational visit to The Australian Hotel, where they toured the facilities, observed daily operations, and engaged in a Q&A session with industry professionals. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights and hopefully inspired future career aspirations in the hospitality sector. Thank you to Jamie and Megan!

Our talented Hospitality students made a meaningful impact today by preparing over 90 delicious meals for the Hilltops Community Hub. The students showcased their culinary skills by creating four different dishes: Cheesy Pasta Bake with Chicken and Bacon, Thai Pumpkin Soup, Creamy Tuna Casserole, and Cottage Pie.
This initiative not only allowed the students to practice their cooking techniques and team work skills but also provided a valuable service to our community. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication to giving back. Well done to all involved!
This week another of the Year 11 Biology classes completed a fish dissection to investigate organ systems for gas exchange, nutrient requirements and transport.
