Careers News from Mrs Parkman - Week 10

Wow! It has indeed been a busy term for me with many Year 12 students taking the time to submit their UAC application for University. The process for university entry is changing rapidly and more and more Unis are going with early entry options rather than waiting for ATARs to come out. This is really important for Year 10 and 11 students to know as early entry offers are now being made in August of the HSC year!!

Last year we had 7 students who applied for early entry to Wollongong University and 6 of those secured an offer before they finished their HSC exams- so it is definitely worth a try!!

Offers tend to be made to students who:

  1. Have good results in Year 11
  2. Contribute to their community either inside or outside school through volunteer or paid work
  3. Have a goal and vision about their future (even if that might change)
  4. Display leadership qualities either inside or outside of school (this could be within their small PC group at school - this is not just about school captaincy)

With this in mind, I have delivered an early entry information session to year 12 this morning. The presentation will also be posted on the Year 12 google classroom page but if you would like me to forward you a copy please email me leanne.mcgrath@cg.catholic.edu.au

Universities currently open for early entry include:

Australian Catholic University (ACU)

Charles Sturt University (CSU)

University of Wollongong (UOW)

Macquarie University (MQU)

Western Sydney University (WSU)

The University of Notre Dame *UND)

The University of Sydney (USYD)

Southern Cross University (SCU)

Torrens University (TUA)

La Trobe University (LTU)

The International College of Management (ICMS)

There may also be others that I am not focusing on so it is best to email me or check the relevant website.

Students in Year 10 and 11 need to think about 'giving back' so that they have a solid foundation of continuous community work when the time comes to apply for early entry to Uni - you will be asked to list and prove what you have done.

Obviously, these 4 points mentioned above are also tremendously important if you are looking for a job or an apprenticeship. One regional company told me that they had 35 jobs on offer and received over 1,000 applications!! How will you stand out in the crowd in that case? There are two apprenticeships on offer in the local area now and several students are keen to submit their application. Any student can see me for help with their resume, cover letter or for interview preparation.

It does not matter what your future plans are - everyone is looking for great students who do great things.

Speaking of great things - during the holidays there are several students about to experience some wonderful opportunities

Congratulations to Year 12 student Ruby Glover who has been selected to take part in the annual Bunga Barrabuga Winter HSC program run by the University of Sydney. Ruby will be participating in an intensive HSC program at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in Redfern from 8-12 July.

Congratulations to Year 12 student Jesse Manwaring who will be doing work experience with QANTAS from 15-19th July as part of his long-term goal to become a pilot. We wish him well.

Congratulations to Year 10 student John Jordan who will be travelling to Garden Island in Sydney to do work experience with the Australian Navy on HMAS Kuttabul. The Defence Work Experience Program provides opportunities for young people who have an interest in a Defence career to gain exposure to job roles that are available in the Australian Defence Force. John's interest is in mechanics.

Year 10 work experience

Many students have today received their work experience package. This includes a Student Placement Record that requires information and signatures from the host employer, the student, the parent and lastly the school

When they receive their package students need to go back to the host employer, ask them to complete the relevant section and return it to the student (please allow plenty of time for this to occur). They should then complete the parent and student sections and return it to Mr Cowan or me at the school before the end of Term 3. If students are absent and did not receive their package today we will see them in week 1, term 3.

Please note all pages need to be completed or the form will be returned to the student. This is an important learning opportunity for Year 10 so take time to ensure everyone completes the paperwork correctly - it saves us a lot of follow up time. Thank you in advance.

In November Year 10 students will get their final information package before going out for their week of work.

There are still several students who have made some plans but not confirmed them and I will be emailing them for further information.

Please note 3 other points

  1. If students will be living away from home for work experience an additional form needs to be completed, relevant students have been given that today.
  2. Any student doing plumbing, electrical or construction will need a whitecard. If they do not have this, they can complete the whitecard course at the school before December OR they must pick another option. They are asked to see Mr Schmidt if they do not have a whitecard as he is arranging a course.
  3. Any student going to Hilltops Council will need to complete an additional form and they have been given this today

Please email me if you have any concerns or questions about work experience.
