Vinnies Sleepout 2019
30 Students from years 8 to 12 participated in the annual Vinnies School Sleepout. It gave our students a tangible experience of what it would be like to be homeless, raise awareness about the realities faced by people considered to be homeless, and encourage students to do something about it.
Students made homes for the night out of cardboard boxes and some included luxury items e.g. Swag $10. The night was very cold with many students encouraged to sleep inside. As a college we raised over $1770 for Vinnies Winter appeal.
Students were also issued the challenge of surviving on $550 per fortnight, including rent, groceries, fuel, mobile phone etc. What seemed like an easy task, soon had the students realising that they needed to give up many everyday items just to survive.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff that assisted in making the night so memorable. Mrs Michelle Cronin, Ms Leonie Green, Mr Mark Chifley who slept outside for the night. Miss Meghan Worner for organising our soup for dinner, Ms Rayleigh Keith and Mrs Michelle Cronin for the astronomy activities during the night and finally Ms Donya Tabish for assisting with the students during the evening activities.
