CAREERS

Year 10 Work Experience – Term 4, week 8, 2-6 December

The term has flown, and many Year 10 students have contacted an employer to arrange work experience for December. For those who have not please keep working with your child on some ideas and they can let me know when you have a plan. If they need help, ask them to come and see me early in Term 2. Don’t forget there are a number of activities the students cannot do and I have once again included this list for your information.

 

Year 10 & 12 -Careers Expo – Young

On Tuesday 30th April Year 10 and 12 will be attending the annual Careers Expo being held at Young High School. Students will have an opportunity to speak to employers, Police, Rural Fire Service, the Defence Force and many Universities. They will also be touring the TAFE Campus and learning about their programs in automotive, childcare, health, hair and beauty and electrical. Please take the time to discuss the Expo with your child and what they might need to investigate during their visit.

Year 11 will be attending the Canberra Careers Expo on Thursday 8th August

 

Year 12 - University Admission Centre (UAC) applications are open!

On 3rd April UAC opened online applications for University admissions during 2020. Online applications will remain open until Monday 30th September and students can enter their preferences and change them anytime between now and then. Students applying through UAC will be required to pay a $70 online fee to finalise their application.

Year 12 students will have an information session on UAC during period 1 tomorrow Friday 12th April. A UAC session for parents will be held on Wednesday 8th May from 6pm until 7pm in Room E1. All parents and their students are invited and encouraged to attend.

 

Year 12 - ANU applications are open

This year the Australian National University (ANU) are taking online applications directly through the University. This process opened on 4 March 2019 and closes on 31 May 2019

There is no application fee for this application however, students will be required to meet the co-curricular or service requirement before being eligible.

The application process will cover admission, accommodation, and over 200 scholarships all in one application.

A day in the life of a veterinarian

If you're thinking about pursuing a career as a Vet, you'll know it's going to take a lot of dedication to get you there. But you might not know what a typical day looks like for a Vet. This article could give you more insight. It might help drive your passion to keep learning, or help you decide that you'll be better suited to another path.  

Apprenticeship payments to increase

Good news for current high school students who would rather get an apprenticeship after school than go to Uni. Thanks to a new skills package announced in the 2019 budget there will be:

  • Up to 80,000 new apprenticeships will be created
  • Incentive payments for employers to will double to $8000 per apprenticeship placement
  • Apprentices will receive a new $1000 payment after the first 12 months and another $1000 at completion to encourage them to stick with their training.

Job Spotlight - Architect

What do they do? 

Architects plan, design and review the construction of buildings and spaces. They turn a client’s vision into a reality and provide the ‘map’ for the construction industry to follow. Creative and technical, part Artist and part Engineer. If you have these skills and are passionate about improving the physical and built world looks for the benefit of society and individuals – becoming an Architect could be the career for you.   

 

Duties:

  • Preparing and presenting design proposals to clients
  • Advising clients
  • Producing detailed, technical, drawings
  • Negotiating with contractors and other professionals
  • Attending regular meetings with clients, contractors and other specialists
  • Co-ordinating the work of contractors
  • Making site visits to check on progress
  • Dealing with problems that might come up during building.

 Skills required:

  • Great listening and communication skills
  • Visual awareness and an eye for detail
  • Ability to draw and create work in three dimensions (3D)
  • Technical skills
  • Inventive and imaginative
  • Be passionate about buildings and the built environment
  • Problem- solver

Pathways to becoming an architect

Hold a Bachelor degree in arts or design with a major in Architecture, Masters degree or other qualification in the discipline of architecture accredited by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia. Registered with the Architects Registration Board in the state or territory in which you intend to practise (requires work experience monitoring).   

Average salary Graduate $55,996,  non-registered experienced $74,691, Experience Associate $115,964 (Source: Architecture AU)
