Year 7 Science - Skype a Scientist

7.2 Science participated in Hennessy's  first 'Skype a Scientist' experience this week, an initiative designed to connect scientists and classrooms. Students were able to chat to Julianna Kadar, a shark biologist from Macquarie University. Julianna described her PhD research on the Port Jackson shark which involves attaching trackers that use fitbit-like technology to study the movement and behaviour of the sharks.  It was an extremely informative time and Julianna was blown away by the endless stream of questions from Year 7.

Anna Harden

"I thought that it was great! I learnt that port Jackson sharks are being tracked with an accelerometer to see what they have been doing. Thank you Julianna for taking up your time to talk to us about sharks."

Riley Dixon

"I liked the experience and learned that port Jackson sharks have plates with tiny teeth instead of just big teeth and I learned that the Port Jackson sharks eat urchins but they just get the juice instead of eating the whole thing."

Ayla Malkav

"I really enjoyed listening to Julianna, so thanks! Also I learnt that the tracker on the sharks is called an accelerometer."

Sebastian Stratford

"I thought it was great because she was very interactive and it was great to hear about her research and knowledge. I thought it was very interesting to hear about how they put fitbits on the sharks! Thanks."

 Majella McGrath

"I think that the experience was a great way to learn about what Julianna and her team do. I learned that the Port Jackson shark mostly live in the south coast. Thank you Julianna"

James Payne

"I thought that Skype a Scientist was awesome and interesting, especially with a scientist like Julianna. I never knew that the Port Jackson shark has a plate with small blunt teeth instead of just teeth. Thank You!"
